Galway SFC Final

COROFIN 2-14 MOUNTBELLEW-MOYLOUGH 0-10

By Cian O'Connell at Tuam Stadium

Corofin remain the splendid standard bearers in Galway football. An emerging and exciting Mountbellew-Moylough outfit were outclassed by Corofin, who completed a five-in-a row with the minimum of fuss.

The decisive blows were landed in the third quarter with two goals planted by Conor Cunningham and Martin Farragher. Those Corofin majors arrived even though they had been reduced to 14 men when Cathal Silke was sent off in the dying embers of the first half.

A tight, tense, and tactical opening opening showcased Corofin’s finishing ability as the favourites converted 0-8 from 10 attempts.

Those figures included a flurry of four early points courtesy of the subtle Ronan Steede, Michael Farragher, and Jason Leonard (two).

Then Corofin were denied an 11th minute goal when Mountbellew-Moylough custodian Brian Donnellan thwarted Gary Sice.

That encouraged Mountbellew-Moylough, who kicked three of the next five points with Barry McHugh, efficient throughout the Allianz Football League, effective.

As the interval approached Leonard and Dylan Wall extended Corofin’s advantage to five before McHugh replied with a late free.

Martin Farragher netted a goal for Corofin at Tuam Stadium.

On the stroke of half-time Corofin’s Cathal Silke was red carded ensuring the issue was delicately poised at the break with Kevin O’Brien’s charges 0-8 to 0-4 ahead.

That lead, though, was extended hugely within minutes of the restart with Leonard and Sice rifling points prior to Cunningham’s 38th minute goal.

Joe Bergin responded with a point, but Corofin ploughed on unperturbed as Martin Farragher rattled the Mountbellew-Moylough net seconds later.

From then until the bitter end it was a tough struggle for Mountbellew-Moylough, who had talisman Bergin red carded in the 46th minute.
