Louth are top of Division 3 on points difference after shooting five goals against Sligo on their way to a 5-16 to 0-16 win in Drogheda.

Louth laid the foundation for victory in the opening half when goals from Jim McEneaney, Eoghan Duffy and Sam Mulrony helped them build a 3-8 to 0-8 lead by the interval.

Sligo, looking for their first win of the campaign, needed goals to get back in the game but it was Louth who pushed on for victory with Duffy shooting his second of the afternoon and Declan Byrne getting their fifth as they cantered to their third win of the season.

They are just ahead of Down on points difference in the table as the promotion race intensifies.

Down kept up their challenge with an impressive 3-7 to 0-8 win at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park in Longford.

Donal O’Hare was the hero for Paddy Tally’s men as he scored a hat-trick of goals as they secured their third win of the campaign.

O’Hare’s opening goal helped Down lead by 1-4 to 0-3 at the break and then he struck for his second shortly after the restart.

He completed his hat-trick 20 minutes from time, while at the other goalkeeper Rory Burns saved a penalty from Michael Quinn as Longford slipped to their first defeat of the campaign.

Westmeath kept their promotion hopes alive with a 0-13 to 0-10 win over Laois as they bounced back from their loss to Down last time out.

They are just a point off the leaders with John Heslin marking his return to inter-county football with a fine display.

But it was the free-taking of Ger Egan which was decisive as he kicked eight from placed balls and also landed one from play, with Evan O’Carroll shooting four points for a Laois side who fell to their second loss of the campaign.

John Maughan’s Offaly secured their first win when they edged out Carlow by 0-15 to 1-9 at Bord na Mona O’Connor Park in Tullamore.

Carlow finished with 12 men having suffered two red cards and a black card late in the game, having led by 1-5 to 0-7 at the break having played against the breeze.

Paul Broderick got the only goal of the game from a penalty but Offaly took charge after the restart and with goalkeeper Paddy Dunican producing a couple of top class saves and as Bernard Allen and Anton Sullivan took their haul to seven points between them, Offaly did enough to secure an invaluable win.
