GAA.ie Hurler of the Week nominations

There was no shortage of special individual performances over the course of an epic Sunday of Allianz Leagues hurling.

You need your main men to lead by example in knock-out sport, three of the finest hurlers in the country – Wexford’s Conor McDonald, Galway’s Joe Canning, and Clare’s Tony Kelly – were all superb on Sunday and have been nominated for the GAA Hurler of the Week.

The voting process is simple: retweet the image of your chosen player on the GAA's official Twitter account (@officialgaa) or like their image on the GAA's official Facebook and Instagram pages. Voting will close at 3pm on Tuesday, April 4 and the winner will be announced on GAA.ie.

Hurler of the Week nominations

Conor McDonald (Wexford)

Wexford’s dramatic victory over Kilkenny in Sunday’s Allianz League Quarter-Final marked the first time they’ve beaten the Cats in Nowlan Park since 1957.

It was very much a team performance, but Conor McDonald still managed to stand head and shoulders above every other player on the field.

He scored eight points, four of them from play, and tortured the Kilkenny defence with his intelligent movement and ball-winning ability.

Tony Kelly (Clare)

Tony Kelly has certainly flushed the disappointment of losing the All-Ireland Club Final with Ballyea out of his system going by his man of the match performance for Clare in their Division 1A relegation play-off against Dublin.

He ran Dublin ragged from his midfield berth in the second half and finished the match with a tally of 1-3 from play to his name.

The goal was something extra-special. He intercepted a Conor Dooley puck-out and knifed through the Dublin defence with a speedy solo-run before lashing and unstoppable shot to the bottom corner of the net form all of 30 yards.

Joe Canning (Galway)

Galway produced the come-back of the day when they defeated Waterford by three points in their All-Ireland Quarter-Final having trailed by 10 at one stage in the second-half.

Joe Canning was the beating heart of their stirring revival as he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck from his centre-forward berth to help the Westerners scored 1-7 without reply to close out the game.

Canning finished with a tally of 1-10 to his name, six points of which were from play, and roved all over the field to great effect in a hugely hard-working display.
