GAA.ie Hurler of the Week nominations

Aron Shanagher

Aron Shanagher

It was a dramatic weekend in the Allianz Hurling League as Clare hammered Kilkenny, Dublin shocked Cork, Wexford's form graph under Davy Fitzgerald hit new heights, and Tipperary flexed their muscles against Waterford.

There were no shortage of contenders for the Hurler of the Week award, but in the end we settled on three nominees - Clare's Aron Shanagher, Tipperary's John McGrath, and Laois attacker Stephen 'Picky' Maher.

The voting process is simple: retweet the image of your chosen player on the GAA's official Twitter account (@officialgaa) or like their image on the GAA's official Facebook and Instagram pages. Voting will close at 3pm on Tuesday, February 21 and the winner will be announced on GAA.ie.

Hurler of the Week nominations

Aron Shanagher - Clare

Clare's ruthless demolition of Kilkenny was a serious statement victory and no-one played a bigger part in it than talented young forward Aron Shanagher.

He scored 1-4, 1-3 of which came from play, and absolutely electric in the opening 13 minutes when he played a part in every Clare score as they raced into a 1-5 to 0-2 lead.

Kilkenny debutant Evan Cody simply couldn't handle Shanagher's mixture of power, pace, and clinical finishing, and you get the feeling he isn't the last corner-forward who'll suffer at Shanagher's hands this year and for many more to come.

John McGrath - Tipperary

Waterford supporters were surely relieved not to see Seamus Callanan start for Tipperary on Sunday, but his replacement, John McGrath, proved to be a more than capable deputy.

He was the game's top scorer from play with a tally of 1-3 and chipped in with three pointed frees too.

His ability to win possession with intelligent movement and then do something productive with it made him a thorn in Waterford's side all afternoon.

Stephen Maher

Stephen Maher

Stephen Maher - Laois

The classy Laois half-forward was the main man for his team yet again when they defeated Offaly in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League on Saturday evening.

He scored 0-12, five points of which was from play, as he gave an exhibition of clincial striking that proved to be the main difference between the two teams.

Maher's performance was all the more impressive considering his exertions the previous Wednesday when helping Carlow IT to victory over UL in the Fitzgibbon Cup.
