Tony Doran wants Wexford to concentrate on 'being consistently competitive' during the next few campaigns.

Former Buffers Alley and Wexford star Doran, who was inducted into the GAA Museum Hall of Fame on Thursday, admits significant work is being carried out throughout the Model County.

“Let’s face it, we are a fair bit away from it," is Doran's verdict about Wexford's current All Ireland ambitions.

"There’s no point in saying anything else. The results more or less speak for themselves and we definitely have a lot of ground to make up.

"Before we talk about winning All-Irelands, we have to talk about being consistently competitive and that’s the first thing we would be hoping for and things would pick up from there and you never know after a couple of years time."

Three Bord Gais Energy Leinster Under 21 Championships were won between 2013 and 2015 which is encouraging, but Doran wants further progress to be made.

“There’s a lot of work being done at under-age in the county," Doran acknowledges.

"Maybe we are a bit disappointed it’s not bearing a little bit more in the line of under-age titles.

"We won three Leinster U21 titles in a row but we would be disappointed we weren’t able to land a Leinster minor title.

"We haven’t won a Leinster minor title since ’85, which is 31 years now at this stage. That would be disappointing.

"Nevertheless, there’s a lot of work going into under-age hurling in the county. Maybe we might have to take a bit of a look to see if we are progressing up through the age groups satisfactorily enough."
