Davy Fitzgerald sensed something was stirring as Wexford launched a second thrilling comeback in two games.

Galway might have led by six points with 17 minutes remaining, but Wexford outscored the locals by 1-6 to 0-1 in the closing stages.

A week previously Wexford, demonstrating admirable resilience, came thundering back to beat Limerick so Sunday's win in Salthill was also furiously celebrated. "The end was so exciting, I just knew we were going to get over the line," Fitzgerald remarked afterwards.

Victories over Limerick and Galway ensure Wexford are nicely placed in the promotion race. "It is in our own hands so it is," Fitzgerald admits. "Offaly beat Wexford last year. We know what is ahead of us. Laois, probably, should have beaten Wexford last year. Wexford got over them by a point. I think Kerry are the most improved team in 1B.

"We know what is ahead of us so we are not going to take anything for granted. The only thing is that we have prepared very hard early because we wanted to have a decent League.

"When you go that hard, other teams mightn’t be going as hard as early so there is no point getting carried away just yet."

Injecting Wexford with confidence is critical according to Fitzgerald. "The whole thing was to get that confidence. But in order to that confidence, I wouldn’t have gone out as hard as early in Clare in other years, you’d try time it a bit better for later in the year.

"I just feel we needed to be up and playing in this League because this League is very competitive. The Wexford confidence over the last number of years, they needed more confidence. I could see that in them. We got that. There is still a lot more to be done."
