AIB Leinster Club SHC semi-final

BALLYBODEN ST ENDA'S (DUBLIN) 5-28 COOLDERRY (OFFALY) 5-25 (After extra-time)

By Paul Keane at Parnell Park, Dublin

Colm Basquel, best known as a Dublin footballer, displayed his hurling artistry with a brilliant 3-3 on his full club debut for Ballyboden St Enda's to nudge them through to the AIB Leinster club SHC final.

But the 2007 finalists were forced to dig so deep to qualify for the December 2 date with Henry Shefflin's Ballyhale Shamrocks, edging an epic semi-final encounter that required two separate chunks of extra-time at Parnell Park.

Paul Ryan's 14-point haul was decisive for the Dublin champions and it was his three points in the second-half of the second lot of extra-time, all from frees, that separated the sides.

But Basquel was the player everybody was talking about after an incredible game and, fittingly, it was he that actually won all three of those late frees for Ryan.

Aside from his 3-3 tally, the 2016 All-Ireland club football medal winner also played a key role in a goal for Conal Keaney and won the free that Ryan converted to take the game to extra-time initially.

It was a tie with more angles than the most complex of trigonometry lessons and Coolderry had three players dismissed late on in the game while Keaney also saw red for Ballyboden.

Ex-Offaly forward Brian Carroll scored 2-16 from Coolderry, 2-5 of which came from play, but still finished on the losing side and was also one of the three players red carded.

Kevin Brady and goalkeeper Stephen Corcoran were the other Coolderry players to leave the field early though the Faithful County representatives put up one hell of a battle.

They trailed virtually throughout normal time and conceded 2-1 inside the opening three minutes as Niall Ryan and then Basquel hit the net for 'Boden to open up a seven-point gap.

Coolderry responded to that awful start with six points in a row, setting in motion a tit-for-tat scoring encounter that lasted almost 100 minutes.

Keaney's goal, after a Coolderry clearance was blocked down by Basquel, sent 'Boden in at half-time 3-8 to 0-10 ahead.

Joe Fortune's side stretched the gap out to nine points in the second-half but Coolderry goals from Conor Molloy, Declan Parlon and an injury-time close range poke from Carroll tied it up.

Coolderry briefly moved ahead through captain Kevin Connolly but Basquel, who'd scored his second goal in the 46th minute, then won a free that Ryan converted to forced extra-time at 4-17 to 3-20.

Basquel rounded the 'keeper for his third goal in extra-time but a second Carroll goal cancelled it out and they were level again at 5-22 to 4-25 after 20 minutes of extra-time.

That meant another 10 minutes had to be played - split into two five-minute halves - and 'Boden eventually came out on top by outscoring Coolderry 0-6 to 1-0 in this period.

Ryan got five of these six points though both sides were reduced in numbers as the emotion got the better of the teams and resulted in those dismissals.
