'Go Games' model gets Congress backing

Saturday, April 17, 2010

A motion proposing that all games at U12 level and younger be organised on the ‘Go Games’ model was given an overwhelming endorsement by delegates at Congress on Saturday morning.

The ‘Go Games’ model, which is part of the Respect Initiative launched by the GAA in February, sees teams organised on an 11-a-side basis and ensures that all participants get to play in the full game.

At U12 level, games are organised on a mini-league format.

Liam O'Neill, Chairman of the National Games Development Committee., underlined the importance of adopting the ‘Go Games’ model.

“This motion has come from the Grassroots. The ‘Go Games’ model is a must-win model. The15-a-side games at this age have led to bad behaviour from mentors, and sometimes bad behaviour from supporters and parents.

“In passing this motion, we are saying to families if you bring along your children to us they will be always given a game, every time there is a game.”

Paul O’Gorman, Monaghan, said that the experiences of the ‘Go Games’ model in the county had prompted very positive feedback from parents, participants and coaches.

“We can no longer assume that children will naturally gravitate to our games; parents will take them elsewhere,” he said.

Delegates from Dublin, Kilkenny, Kerry and Armagh all backed the proposal.

Armagh delegate Paul Duggan gave a ringing endorsement of the ‘Go Games’ model, saying: “I’m delighted to tell you Armagh says yes to investment, yes to child-centred games and yes to a positive legacy.”

Gerry O’Sullivan, Chairman of the Cork County Board, pointed out that the proposal had been backed by the Cork Board after a close vote, but he suggested that losing the competitive element of games at U12 level could mean youngsters will move to other codes.

“There was widespread support for the ‘Go Games’ model but not at the expense of the U12 competition,” he said.

The motion was adopted with almost universal approval.
