Brendan Murtagh was to the fore in Westmeath’s 0-19 to 3-8 Allianz Hurling League Division IIA defeat of Kerry at Cusack Park.
Kilkenny native Willie O’Dwyer netted for Kerry in the first half, but the Lake men led by 0-12 to 1-6 at the break.
Although the Kingdom led late on thanks to two Mikey Boyle goals, Westmeath ensured the win with three consecutive Murtagh points in the dying minutes.
Carlow, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 17-point win over Down.
Craig Doyle hit the first of Carlow’s three goals in a 3-17 to 1-6 victory, before Danny Toner hit back to leave seven points between the sides at the break.
However, goals from Shane and Marty Kavanagh ensured the two points went the wat of Kevin Ryan’s side.
At Aughrim, Jonathan O’Neill grabbed a dramatic late equaliser in Wicklow’s 0-14 to 1-11 draw with Derry.
In Division IIB, Kildare held off a late Meath fightback to claim a 1-12 to 0-13 win at Pairc Tailteann.
Kildare led 1-6 to 0-6 thanks to a Paul Divilly goal on three minutes and held on for victory despite being outscored in the second half.
Mayo, meanwhile, were 0-16 to 1-6 winners over Roscommon at Athleague, where the home side were reduced to 14 men in the second half.
London dominated their clash with Armagh at Ruislip and ran out 2-21 to 0-10 winners.
