Michael Meehan spoke to the Irish Times after Galway’s Connacht Championship win over Roscommon on Sunday and admitted his relief at finally returning to action following a serious ankle injury.
Meehan, 27, played for 25 minutes with the aid of some pre-game painkillers, but the Caltra man made a serious impact in that time, scoring two points and setting up a goal for team-mate Gary Sice.
“It is a long road and I’m not even there yet. It is a continuous thing, minding this for me. There is a club championship next weekend so I need to start planning my week now to see what I can and can’t do to play then.”
Meanwhile, Monaghan captain Darren Hughes has revealed the extent of the concern his injury has caused.
Hughes has calcification in his leg after sustaining dead legs in successive weeks, and admitted that without the right treatment, the injury can be career threatening.
"It is serious, even walking on it you’re probably at risk,” he said in the Irish Examiner.
“It can be career-threatening if it’s not looked after. The physio (Alan Byrne) said he cannot emphasise how careful I have to be with this injury. There is nothing out there that can cure it bar giving it time.’’
The injury theme in this morning’s papers continues with the Irish Examiner bringing us news of a hamstring tear suffered by Kerry defender Marc Ó Sé, which will keep him out of Sunday’s Munster Championship opener against Tipperary.
Ó Sé picked up the injury in a training session and was in Dublin to see a specialist on Monday, but the problem is not thought to be serious and he should be back in action in a matter of weeks.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, Louth captain Paddy Keenan has warned that his side have major improvements to make for their Leinster quarter-final clash with Dublin on June 3.
Louth just about squeezed through to a meeting with the Dubs thanks to a 76th minute Daniel O’Connor goal in their win over Westmeath on Sunday.
"That performance won't suffice against Dublin," Keenan said. "We have an awful lot of work left to do. We are not getting carried away with the win over Westmeath.
"We were pretty poor in the middle of the field. From Tuesday on we will go at it. We are not going up there to make up the numbers. We have to go at them and be confident.”
In an interview with the Irish Sun, Colm Cooper has admitted that Tommy Walsh is unlikely to be seen in a Kerry jersey any time soon after his successful debut for the Sydney Swans over the weekend.
Walsh scored two goals and a behind in the Swans’ win over the Melbourne Demons at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“We’d love to have Tommy back because he would be a massive addition to us,” said Cooper. “But look, he’s doing his best and playing as a professional sportsperson down there.
“While it’s our loss, it’s a big success story for him and I hope he goes on to make it big there because he’s certainly put in a huge amount of work, I know that. We’re unlikely to see him in a Kerry jersey for a while anyway.”
