Cooper finishes as top scorer in 2011 Championship

Monday, September 19, 2011

It will probably be of very little consolation to Kerry captain Colm Cooper, but the 1-3 he scored in Sunday’s All-Ireland final defeat to Dublin was enough to see him finish as top scorer in the 2011 GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship.

Cooper’s haul sees him overhaul the long time leader, Wexford’s Ben Brosnan, by a single point to top the charts on 2-27 (33).

Cooper was the only player capable of winning the accolade on the final day of the season, and points in the 61st and 63rd minutes were enough to see him catch and then overtake Brosnan.

Bernard Brogan, who joint top scored with Cooper on the day with 0-6, was the other big mover in Sunday’s final.

The 2010 Footballer of the Year leapt up the charts from seventh to the third place, slotting in behind second placed Brosnan, and one ahead of last year’s Championship top scorer, Kildare’s John Doyle.
