Mayo bounce back in style

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Mayo condemned Derry to their third successive Allianz GAA Football National League Division One defeat at Celtic Park on Saturday night.

The Oak Leafers are now anchored to the foot of the table after the 2-12 to 1-12 reverse against a Mayo side who bounced back brilliantly from last week's luckless loss to Dublin.

Mayo were leading by a point when Andy Moran took advantage of a defensive mix-up caused by Alan Dillon's delivery to fire home the opening goal in the 31st minute.

The Westerners led 1-7 to 0-5 at the break and it got worse for the home side in the second half when Aidan O'Shea hit the back of the net in the 45th minute after yet another high ball.

did mount a late comeback, but by the time Eoin Bradley snatched a late goal, it was merely a consolation for last year's Division One finalists.

Meanwhile, Down moved three points clear at the top of the Division Two table with a 0-13 to 0-11 win over Donegal at Ballybofey.

The home side led 0-5 to 0-4 at the break, but James McCartan's men came to life at the start of the second half as Benny Coulter and Martin Clarke were amongst the scorers as the Mourne men moved four points clear.

However, Donegal hit back with points from Colm McFadden and Anthony Thompson to level the game at 0-11 to 0-11 to set up a grandstand finish.

Down were not to be denied though, as John Clarke and substitute Peter Fitzpatrick kicked late points to leave them clear at the summit of the table.

In Allianz GAA Football National League Division Three, Cavan enjoyed a 0-17 to 0-12 victory over Wexford at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Cian Mackey was the star of the show for Blues, kicking five points to seal the win against Jason Ryan's side, who had Brian Malone sent off for a second yellow card.
