GAA President Christy Cooney launches the Transport Gaels 125th Anniversary of Gaelic Games in Irish Transport
Today, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana launched CIÉ Transport Gaels GAA Club celebrations to mark 125 years of Gaelic games in the organisation.
To mark this historic milestone, Transport Gaels will be hosting a series of Football, Hurling and Camogie matches in Croke Park on Saturday, 8th October 2011.
Speaking at the launch event, which was also attended by Minster for Arts, Heritage and an Ghaeltacht and former Kerry All-Ireland winning footballer Jimmy Deenihan TD and representatives from CIE, Translink and Dublin club Liffey Gaels the GAA President said: “The ties between the GAA and CIE are strong and numerous and it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge this special milestone for the legions of CIE employees who have played our games at various different levels down through the years.
“In addition to embracing our games, CIE’s role in the popularisation of football and hurling over the years through the provision of transport has been invaluable and the service they provide remains as relevant as ever.
“I wish everyone involved in the upcoming celebrations every success and hope our games continue to go from strength to strength in the organisation.”
A celebrity charity football match will finish off the day’s celebrations. TDs, prominent members of the Irish sports media and former inter-county players will be battling it out in a special half hour football match in aid of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Special Olympics Ireland.
Former Donegal senior inter-county footballer Martin McHugh and Minister Deenihan, will act as captains during the celebrity match.
Tickets for the event can be purchased on the GAA website www.gaa.ie (€10 for adults and €5 for children). Gate receipts from the event will be donated to The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Special Olympics Ireland.
