McDonnell undecided on inter-county future

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Armagh’s Steven McDonnell will decide if he is going to return to inter-county football after the Allianz Football League.

I’m undecided yet so I’ll give it another five or six weeks and make up my mind and see what happens.

McDonnell, 32, is currently taking a break from the game and will use the next five to six weeks to decide whether or not he will return to the Armagh colours ahead of the 2012 Championship.

“I’m doing my own training at the minute and I’m going to take my time to decide what I’m going to do,” McDonnell said in an exclusive interview with www.gaa.ie.

“I’m undecided yet so I’ll give it another five or six weeks and make up my mind and see what happens.”

The Killeavy clubman, a three-time GAA All Star, decided to take an extended break after helping Ireland to victory over Australia in the International Rules Series last autumn.

McDonnell will sit out Armagh’s entire Allianz Football League Division I campaign, before letting manager Paddy O’Rourke know of his intentions for the remainder of the 2012 campaign, with the Orchard County due to line out in the Ulster GAA Football Championship against Tyrone on June 10.

“There’s a few League games I wouldn’t mind being a part of, but you can’t just pick and choose and that’s the way it is,” he added.

“I decided a long time ago that I was going to take a break and think long and hard about my future and that’s what I am doing.”

McDonnell turns 33 in July and his wife is expecting his fourth child next month.

He has represented Ireland in the International Rules Series on five occasions, captaining the team in 2010, and has been playing senior inter-county football for his county since 1999.
