Cork goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack has described manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s decision to hand him the Cork captaincy as a ‘great honour.’
Cusack is set to captain the Rebels for the first time in the Allianz Hurling League game against Waterford on Saturday night.
"When you're made captain there's certain things that you have to do and that has to start from day one,” he told the Irish Independent. “It's something that I treat as a great honour and I'm delighted to have it, but with it comes a great responsibility as well, and it's something I want to embrace and enjoy.
"You have certain characters in the room and you always have certain guys who do the talking. The captain goes up for the toss of the coin and says which way we're playing, but no it's not a massive change for me, no."
Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Cusack expressed his admiration for new manager Barry-Murphy.
"Players want to work for him," said Cusack. "I remember walking into a Cork dressing-room in 1994. He was in charge of the minor team and I remember walking in and thinking ‘that’s Jimmy Barry-Murphy there’ and sitting down listening to him.”
The Irish Examiner reports that Joe Canning was removed by hospital to the Mid-Western Hospital after dislocating his shoulder in LIT’s Fitzgibbon Cup clash with GMIT on Tuesday.
“We’re very disappointed with the injury and how it happened," said LIT boss Davy Fitzgerald. "He was flying, he’s probably the best forward in the country."
Speaking to Tuesday’s Evening Herald, Dublin hurling manager Anthony Daly says David Treacy is primed to play a major role for the Dubs in 2012 after enduring two years of injury torment.
Treacy has suffered cruciate and serious hamstring injuries since the middle of 2010, the latter forcing him into a lengthy rehabilitation process.
“We did all sorts of scans and all sorts of long-term looks to build up the thing,” Daly revealed. “He followed a specific weights programme for the winter and a specific stretching programme which was crucial.
“In fairness to him, he really knuckled down and did that very well. He has worked his way back, but you would always be afraid of that injury recurring. He's in great form and we're hoping he can play at the weekend and play a big part.”
