Cooper and O'Donnell win Monthly Awards

Monday, October 14, 2013

The GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel are delighted to announce Colm Cooper (Kerry) and Shane O'Donnell (Clare) as the Players of the Month for September, in football and hurling respectively. Both selections were chosen by the inter-county playing body, presented in recognition of the players’ outstanding contributions to their counties as another exciting Championship season comes to a close.

Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper gave the performance of a generation as Munster champions Kerry were narrowly defeated by eventual All-Ireland champions Dublin, 3-18 to 3-11. With a majestic showing at centre-forward, the Kerry star delivered a football masterclass during this year’s epic All-Ireland SFC semi-final clash in Croke Park.

All-Ireland hurling teen hero Shane O'Donnell hit the headlines with this sensational hat-trick inside the first 20 minutes of the All-Ireland final replay against Cork, finishing with a remarkable 3-3. The Eire Óg youngster's man of the match performance, set Clare well on their way to their first All-Ireland title since 1997, with a 5-16 to 3-16 victory over Cork.

GAA Commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Liam Ó Néill said: "Our championship seasons in both football and hurling finished on real highs and over the course of some excellent there were some superb individual performances.

"Colm Cooper may not have finished on the winning side in the classic semi-final against Dublin his display - and first half contribution in particular - was as good as anything we have seen from anyone in recent years in Croke Park. On the hurling front Shane O'Donnell enjoyed the day of a lifetime in the hurling final replay, helping to set Clare up for a famous win by producing a performance that will remembered for many years to come. I laud both players for their efforts and once again acknowledge the support of Opel in this awards."

GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell commented: “After a fantastic championship season, September was the pinnacle in terms of excitement. I congratulate both Colm and Shane on their wonderful contributions for Kerry and Clare during the month. In many ways both players represent the spectrum of our membership with Shane setting out on his inter-county journey in spectacular fashion while Colm proved again why is one of football’s greatest exponents. We look forward to seeing our players at next month’s All-Star awards and thanks to everyone who voted and to our sponsors Opel.”

Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, “I'm delighted to present our very own Colm Cooper and Shane O'Donnell with the Opel sponsored GAA/GPA All Star Player of the Month Award for September. This has been a spectacular Championship season, with both players well deserved winners. I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Colm and Shane on their outstanding performances throughout their respective campaigns. As GAA fans ourselves, their individual contributions were truly a joy to watch.

Looking forward to the Opel sponsored GAA/ GPA All-Star Awards, I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish all of the nominees the very best of luck on November 8th. Through our continued sponsorship of the GAA/GPA All Star Awards, along with the ongoing Opel Kit for Clubs initiative and our Opel GAA Ambassador programme, we’re consistently working hard to further strengthen our commitment to the Gaelic Games in Ireland.”
