Player of the Month awards for Hogan and Lynch

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

The GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel are delighted to announce Mark Lynch (Derry) and Richie Hogan (Kilkenny) as the Players of the Month in football and hurling respectively, marking their outstanding performances in April. The selections, chosen by the inter-county playing body, recognise the individual contributions made by both players during their sides’ league clashes.

Derry captain Mark Lynch was one of the shining lights in the Oak Leafer’s impressive Division One run this season, with a number of excellent displays throughout the county’s Allianz League campaign. In winning the GAA GPA Opel Player of the Month, the Banagher club man fended off the stiff challenge of Dublin duo Bernard Brogan and Michael Darragh Macauley who went on to pick up their second successive league title.

With a stand-out performance against old rivals Tipperary, Richie Hogan notched 0-6 from play as the Cats secured their third successive League title, narrowly defeating Tipperary 2-25 to 1-27 in an epic contest at Semple Stadium. The Danesfort corner-forward was a thorn in the Premier County’s side throughout the dramatic final showdown with his powerful league form auguring well for the Cats’ championship prospects this summer.

Commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Liam Ó Néill said: “I would like to acknowledge the recommencement of the player of the month awards and the light they shine on the individual excellence.

"Mark Lynch enjoyed a super campaign with Derry, impressing over the course of their campaign and helping to power them to a final. Richie Hogan was no less influential in Kilkenny's march to another league title and both are deserving of awards chosen by their peers.

"I would also like to acknowledge Opel and their support of these accolades and I look forward to seeing a number of other worthy winners in the weeks and months ahead."

Dessie Farrell, CEO of the Gaelic Players Association added: “I would like to congratulate Mark and Richie on being honoured for their displays by their fellow players. Derry enjoyed a fantastic league run after gaining promotion last season and Mark Lynch was a pivotal figure throughout the spring. We are well accustomed to outstanding performances from Richie Hogan but his display lit up a thrilling battle with Tipp in the league final. I suspect we are in for another incredible hurling championship this summer. Thanks to our dedicated sponsors Opel for their continued support.”

Commenting on the announcement, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, “We are delighted to continue our support of the Gaelic Games with the sponsorship of the GAA GPA All-Stars Awards, now in its forth year. It’s very important for Opel Ireland to recognise the achievements of our players and it’s with great pleasure that we award Mark Lynch and Richie Hogan as the GAA GPA All-Stars Players of the Month for April, proudly sponsored by Opel."
