O’Shea and Kelly win GAA/GPA Player Awards

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

The GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel are delighted to announce Aidan O’Shea (Mayo) and Tony Kelly (Clare) as the Players of the Month for August, in football and hurling respectively. Both selections were chosen by the inter-county playing body, presented in recognition of the players’ outstanding contributions to their counties last month.

Aidan O'Shea grabbed headlines with his outstanding Man of the Match performance in his county’s quarter-final win over Donegal. The towering midfielder also excelled in his team’s semi-final win over Tyrone.

Up and coming Clare ace Tony Kelly inspired his team to victory over Limerick, as the Banner County booked their first All-Ireland SHC final date since 2002. The Ballyea man finished with four from play as his side ran out 1-22 to 0-18 winners against their Munster rivals in Croke Park.

Commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Liam Ó Néill said: “Aidan and Tony have helped to light up what has been a fantastic summer.

“Aidan has been a towering presence for Mayo in their march to a second consecutive final and Tony has emerged as a player of real quality belying his young years. I wish both players well with the remainder of their respective campaigns and remind them that their peers have singled them out for special commendation with these awards.”

GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell commented: “It is no surprise that the players have chosen to honour Aidan and Tony for their respective performances with Mayo and Clare in August. Both players have lit up the championships and have been pivotal figures in their counties’ progress to the All-Ireland finals.

“I would like to congratulate them both on behalf of the GPA and thank the many players who voted last week. Thanks also to our sponsors Opel for their loyal and continued support and we look forward to the annual team and individual selections next month at the end of a wonderful championship season.”

Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, “I am delighted to present Aidan O’Shea and Tony Kelly with the Opel sponsored GAA/GPA All Star Player of the Month Award for August. Both players are well-deserved winners this month, having delivered outstanding performances in their respective quarter and semi-final fixtures, helping their counties to historic All-Ireland finals.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to wish the players, officers and fans of all competing counties the very best of luck as the 2013 Football and Hurling Championship season reaches its climax. With our continued sponsorship of the GAA/GPA All Star Awards, along with the ongoing Opel Kit for Clubs initiative and our Opel GAA Ambassador programme, we’re consistently working hard to further strengthen our commitment to the fans and players of Gaelic Games in Ireland.”
