Barden and Hyland win Player of the Month Awards

Monday, June 11, 2012

The GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel are delighted to announce Paul Barden (Longford) and Willie Hyland (Laois) as the Players of the Month for May in Football and Hurling respectively. Both selections, chosen by the inter-county playing body, recognise the outstanding individual contributions the players made during their sides’ opening round championship clashes last month.

Barden scored the decisive Longford goal to see off Laois in Pearse Park during an outstanding display as the county continued its impressive league form. It confirmed once again Barden as one of the most accomplished forwards in the game today.

Hyland was in razor sharp form over the course of the Leinster SHC first round win against Carlow scoring a personal tally of 13 points and he was very much the dominant figure throughout. While Laois suffered defeat subsequently, Hyland’s display in that game has earned him the approval of his peers who selected him.

Commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Liam Ó Néill said: “Paul’s outstanding performances have certainly gone a long way to contributing to Longford’s progression in the Championship to date. It is also great to see a fellow county man in Willie Hyland picking up the hurling award for May after an excellent display for Laois when beating Carlow.”

Dessie Farrell, CEO of the Gaelic Players Association added: “I’d like to congratulate both Paul and Willie on being selected by their fellow players. It’s a wonderful achievement by both and it is significant that their peers chose to recognise the individual displays of two great players whose counties are outside those pushing for the top honours. It is hugely important that individual talent is acknowledged in this way and it is important for our games that counties like Longford and Laois are supported in their efforts. Longford have made great strides under Glenn Ryan while Laois’ recent underage success bodes well for the future. Thanks to our sponsors Opel and to all the players who voted.”

Commenting on the announcement, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said: “Opel are proud to be associated with Gaelic Games and the GAA/GPA All-Stars Awards. We are delighted to reward Longford’s Paul Barden and Laois’ Willie Hyland, it is fantastic to see the GAA GPA All-Stars Awards sponsored by Opel go to two such deserving winners for May. I wish them and their counties the very best of luck for the rest of the Championship season.”
