McCarthy and Reilly win Player of the Month Awards

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

The GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel are delighted to announce Graham Reilly and Richie McCarthy as the Players of the Month for June in football and hurling respectively. Both selections were chosen by the inter-county playing body, presented in recognition of the players’ outstanding contributions during what has been a thrilling month of championship action.

An inspirational performance by Graham Reilly saw the Royal County overcome Wicklow in the Leinster Championship quarter-final on June 15 and the St Colmcille’s ace was again the architect of his county's victory over Wexford in the semi-final to set up a clash with their old rivals in the provincial decider next Sunday.

Richie McCarthy delivered a man-of-the-match display for Limerick in their stunning victory last month over Tipperary to book a place in the Munster hurling final against Cork. The dynamic full-back was pivotal in overcoming the favourites that day and he will line out in his first senior provincial decider against the Rebels next Sunday.

GAA Commenting on the announcement, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Liam Ó Néill said “Our championships have really caught fire in the last number of weeks thanks to some memorable team performances and a number of stand-out results. However, there have also been displays of individual excellence, not least from Richie and Graham in their respective assignments, contributions that leave them both vying for provincial honours.

“I congratulate both and wish them every success both in their weekend assignments, but also for the remainder of their respective campaigns.”

GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell commented: “Congratulations to Graham and Richie on being recognised by their peers for fine performances in June. It was a month of great drama in both championships and given the number of outstanding individual displays, Graham and Richie can be very proud that their fellow footballers and hurlers have paid tribute their contributions to Meath and Limerick respectively. Thanks to our loyal sponsors Opel for their continued support of the GAA/GPA Awards and to all the players who cast their votes.”

Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, “As we reflect on an epic month of exciting clashes, it’s with pleasure that I present Graham Reilly and Richie McCarthy with the Opel sponsored GAA/GPA All Star Player of the Month Award for June. This is quite an achievement when you consider the calibre of play in recent weeks, and has been awarded to both Graham and Richie in recognition of their outstanding performances during this time. I’d like to take the opportunity to wish them both the very best of luck in the Finals.”

“We also look forward to a summer programme of Opel Kit for Clubs Blitz Days’, developed in partnership with our Opel dealer network and Opel Kit for Clubs ambassadors, with O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club Kilkenny the first stop on the trail. The Opel Kit for Clubs initiative, as well as our continued sponsorship of the GAA/GPA All Star Awards, further strengthens our commitment to the profile and development of Gaelic Games.”
