The start of the new season this weekend is not the preserve of followers of football alone as an innovative new idea for club hurlers called the Táin Hurling League commences across 13 counties.
This weekend club hurlers in the nine counties of Ulster in addition to those in Louth, Longford, Leitrim and Sligo will enter the fray in an effort to widen the base of club hurling in these counties and increase the number of meaningful outings provided to club players.
The competition will dovetail with Allianz Hurling League action and Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher games in the coming months providing a set schedule of games for the counties involved.
Group games across 10 groups have been fixed for the following weekends: Saturday 4th February; Saturday 11th February; Saturday 18th February; Saturday 3rd March; Saturday 7th April
The semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of 21st April and the final for seven days later.
In all 27 games will take place in the competition this weekend.
Next season (2013) will see the introduction of the Táin Youth Hurling Competition for club teams, school teams and Talent Academy Squads (U13 – U17). It will mirror the Táin Adult Club League.
The name for the initiative is borrowed from the famed Táin Bó Cúailgne.
