Kavanagh quits Kildare panel

Thursday, January 03, 2013

James Kavanagh has decided to opt off the Kildare senior football panel for the 2013 season.

Kavanagh has decided not to make himself available to manager Kieran McGeeney for the upcoming campaign, citing ‘personal reasons’ for his decision according to the Kildare county board website.

An All Star nominee in 2009, the 27-year-old has been an integral member of the Lilywhites’ attack since making his inter-county debut in 2005.

McGeeney’s side open their 2013 campaign with a Bord Na Móna O’Byrne Cup game against Carlow IT in St Conleth’s Park on Sunday (2pm).

New selectors Jason Ryan and Damien Hendy will have the chance to oversee their new charges in a competitive game for the first time.

James Eaton, Cathal McNally, Conor Mellett and Willie Groome will all be hoping to impress having been drafted into the panel.

Meanwhile, veteran forward John Doyle has returned to the squad for a 14th season, while Dermot Earley continues his recovery from a knee injury.
