San Francisco's Ulster Gaelic Club celebrate 30th anniversary

All-Ireland winning Kerry and Tyrone captains Dara Ó Cinnéide and Peter Canavan travelled to San Francisco last weekend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the highly successful Ulster Gaelic Club. One of the most vibrant GAA clubs outside of Ireland, the Ulster Gaelic Club are reigning North American Gaelic Football Senior Champions and have won four of the last five titles. Ó Cinnéide was also there for their 20th anniversary ten years ago and believes the club's success is down to the fact that they have fostered such a strong sense of community. The facilities are magnificent, well organised, good people on the ground," said Ó Cinnéide. "You can have all the structures you want, it's about the people being good. They're doingit for the right reason, the love of the game and to promote the game. "They have each others backs out here and that's what I like i particualr about the Ulster Club. They seem to have a community going. You don't get that with other clubs, people come and go, but the Ulster club seem to have it cracked. "In terms of a template of how to do it in America, the Ulster club way seems to be the right way." The Ulster Club will send a juvenile team to the 2017 Feile na nGael in June and Peter Canavan is expecting them to more than hold their own. "The standard i must say did surprise me, the girls as well as the boys," said Canavan. "They're really up for going back home in June and competing in the Feile. Going on what I've seen here they'll be able to hold their own.  "There's great coaches here giving up their time, no different than in clubs back home, and that's great to see. Hopefully they'll have a successful trip when they go back home."
