“Other than it being a good workout for us and seeing some of the new lads in this environment, there wasn’t a whole lot you could read into it,” **Roscommon **manager Kevin McStay reflected following their emphatic win over IT Sligo last Sunday.

NUIG, who defeated a depleted Mayo at Elverys MacHale Park, should provide a much tougher test.

Former Mayo footballer Maurice Sheridan is in charge of the Galway students, who are busy preparing for the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup.

Roscommon struck six goals in their victory over IT Sligo with Andrew Glennon bagging a hat-trick.

The Murtagh brothers, Ciarain and Diarmuid, impressed, while Donie Smith registered four points from play.

In Ballina Stephen Rochford’s **Mayo **are expected to continue their January experimentation when hosting IT Sligo.

Despite losing to NUIG Rochford was encouraged by the performance. “You could see there by the gentlemen that togged out and played that the spirit is very good in Mayo football. It gives great encouragement and optimism for the weeks and months ahead."

Buoyed up by a convincing success over GMIT, Brendan Guckian’s Leitrim will be hoping to make an impact when Galway visit Ballinamore.

Emlyn Mulligan registered 1-4 and the form of Nevin O’Donnell bodes well too for Leitrim.

Kevin Walsh’s Tribesmen finished strongly to defeat Sligo at Enniscrone with Mountbellew-Moylough newcomer Barry McHugh prominent.

Johnny Duane, Fiontan O’Curraoin, and Sean Armstrong all returned to maroon inter-county action in that fixture.

Sligo, who play **GMIT **this weekend, started brightly in the first against Galway before the visitors seized the initiative in the closing stages.

“It was pleasing, but I was disappointed we didn't get the win because I felt that we did enough to win,” Sligo manager Niall Carew commented.
