Allianz Football League

Kerry v Tyrone, Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, 2pm

Played six, won two, drawn two, lost two - that is Kerry's record in the Allianz Football League so far this year.

Last weekend Cavan, similar to Dublin eight days previously, came swinging in the closing stages to earn a draw.

Kerry didn't play as well as they would have liked at Kingspan Breffni Park according to manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice.

"We got what we deserved," Fitzmaurice said after the Cavan stalemate. "We didn't play well enough to win the game.

"I think you have to give an awful lot of credit to Cavan for their performance as well.

"Particularly in the first half they made it very hard for us. We had a lot of possession, but they were very well set up and disciplined in how they defended.

"At the same time, there were parts of our performance that could be improved."

While Cavan were dividing the spoils with Kerry 50 miles away in Omagh Tyrone were left reflecting on what might have been.

A second successive loss to Mayo ensures Tyrone need favours from elsewhere if they are to advance to the League decider.

After four games Tyrone were unbeaten and had seven points deposited in their account. Tyrone haven't been clinical enough during their defeats to Donegal and Mayo according to manager Mickey Harte.

"There's no doubt we created enough chances to get something out of the game, but if the ball doesn't go between the posts, it doesn't work," Harte remarked following the Mayo match. "So there's learning in that for us."

The Red Hands now make the long trek to Killarney hoping a victory might be enough to book a place in next weekend's League showpiece.

Kerry need the points too and a home success could see them advance if results elsewhere fall into place.

Fitzmaurice has provided young players with chances throughout the competition and was pleased with the resilience shown in Cavan.

“Our decision making was off," Fitzmaurice remarked. "There was an awkward breeze which affected the team’s shooting at different times, but I think we’d have lost that game a couple of years ago, so I’m glad to have got the point.”

One more will ensure top flight status is retained.
