EirGrid Leinster U-21 Football Championship first round
Westmeath 2-8 Meath 0-12
Wexford 1-18 Carlow 0-8
Two goals proved crucial for Westmeath as they edged out neighbours Meath in the first round of the EirGrid Leinster U-21 Football Championship.
A converted first-half penalty kept the Lake County in touch in the first half and they trailed by 0-7 to 1-3 at the break.
On a rain-lashed night in Mullingar it looked like Meath were starting to take control of the time when they moved 0-12 to 1-6 ahead by the 46th minute.
But the home team struck for their second-goal five minutes from the end to earn their passage through to the Quarter-Final where they'll play reigning Leinster Champions Dublin.
In tonight's other first-round clash, Wexford proved too strong for Carlow as they ran out 13-point winners.
They were already up by five at half-time and maintained their dominance in the second-half with a goal from Mikey Dwyer sealing a quarter-final tie with Offaly.
Louth and Wicklow were also due to play in the first-round of the EirGrid Leinster U-21 Football Championship tonight but the match was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Baltinglass.
