Canning backs helmet regulations

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Galway star Joe Canning has welcomed the introduction of new regulations which prohibit a player from entering the field of play without a helmet and full face guard.

The 21-year-old, who is never seen in action without his trademark red helmet, said it was vital for players, especially young children, to use a helmet which has passed stringent safety standards.

Canning is a brand ambassador for MARC Sports who launched a novel “Scrappage Scheme” for helmets in Croke Park last week. The Galway-based firm will make a donation to the children’s charity, Make-A-Wish®, Ireland for every old helmet that is scrapped under the innovative scheme.

Speaking to GAA.ie, Canning outlined the importance of wearing an IS355 approved helmet, a new safety standard which aims to eradicate the use of outdated and unsafe helmets.

“It’s important, especially for young kids,” said Canning.

“Growing up, it is important to get used to wearing a helmet for when they get that bit older, especially when they have passed safety regulations.

“It will help prevent injuries. You see lots of guys with lots of cuts and teeth missing and things like that, and hopefully by wearing a helmet that will counteract that and save more doctors and physios having to deal with cuts and stitches and stuff like that.

“I don’t think I have ever played without one, I’d nearly be too afraid to go out on the pitch! It’s a thing I always wore so it’s grand for me.”

As a regular helmet wearer, Canning said the new regulations will not affect his game, but he did admit that those who have played without headgear in the past will take some time to come to terms with them.

“It’s easy for me to say obviously, because I have worn a helmet all my life that they should just wear it (a helmet), but is hard on them and you have to feel for them in a way, but it’s a new rule and they have to wear it or not play,” he added.
