Over the course of the 2010 and 2011 Championship seasons, the GAA has and will undertake an extensive educational programme warning of the dangers of pitch invasions, which have continued to cause serious health and safety problems at Croke Park and at the various grounds around the country.
A Pitch Invasions Committee was established and a presentation was made to delegates at Annual Congress at Newcastle, Co. Down in April 2010, including a DVD, which graphically illustrated how close Croke Park had come to witnessing a tragedy in recent years. This video can be viewed above.
In addition, the GAA has published a series of feature articles in Championship match programmes outlining the reasons why the tradition of pitch invasions has to come to an to ensure the safety of players, patrons and Croke Park staff and stewards.
In conjunction with the GPA, some of the top players in both hurling and football have come on board to lend their support to the campaign, including Marc Ó Sé of Kerry, Kilkenny hurler P.J. Ryan and Tyrone footballer Seán Cavanagh, who explains exactly why top GAA stars dread crowds spilling onto the pitch after important matches.
